A simple once a month flea treatment application will keep your pet as well as your home flea and tick free.
Flea and tick problems are prevalent in most areas of the world. While the old standby flea dips and shampoos are still available, veterinary products have become much more sophisticated and easy to apply. Many of them work through a topical action and need to be applied monthly. Both fleas and ticks are more than just pests. Many dogs and cats are flea allergic and even a small amount of flea saliva on their skin can cause severe skin reactions. Likewise, ticks can transmit more severe diseases like Lyme's disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Flea medications have come a long way over the years. There are plenty of more options than resorting to using the old fashioned flea shampoos or collars. At your first visit to the veterinarian he or she should provide you with the recommended flea medication treatment for your pet. Most likely you will be given a topical treatment to prevent fleas on your pet. These topical treatments are applied to the pet's skin as the products instructions describe.
By starting a routine with a once a month flea treatment you should be able to prevent fleas from ever harming your pet. Do not assume that just because your pet is indoors most of the time that it is not possible for fleas to come in contact with him or her. Remember flea treatments will only be effective when applied every month all year round. Check your pet regularly by examining the fur for little black specks which can be mistaken as dirt. Apply a flea treatment immediately if you find fleas on your pet. If fleas are caught soon enough then they will not have the opportunity to invade your home.
