Heartworm Disease and Other Internal Parasites

Severe cardiovascular disease can result from heartworm infection, but with proper medications, prevention is possible. Mosquitoes transmit the parasite to dogs and cats, but dogs are much more susceptible to the disease. Cats have a strong immune reaction to the parasite, and the full life cycle of the heartworm does not often take place in a cat.

However, most veterinarians agree that cats living in areas where heartworm disease is considered prevalent or if the cat lives outdoors much of the time, the cat should receive heartworm preventative. Between 2 to 14% of cats in endemic areas acquire heartworm disease according to recent studies. However, heartworm infection in both cats and dogs can cause severe symptoms and even death so consulting with a veterinarian in the area and using proper prevention are critical. A simple blood test can also be performed at the veterinary office to detect heartworm infection and is usually preformed prior to starting a preventative regimen and periodically throughout a pet's life.

Just like flea and tick prevention, the products available for heartworm prevention are numerous. They now include topical and oral products, and many are combination products that can prevent fleas, ticks and other parasites (most heartworm preventatives will also prevent some intestinal worms). Once again, the particular choice for heartworm prevention is dependent on many factors including owner preference and the prevalence of disease in the local area.

Typically heartworm medications come in the form of a once a month pill. If given on a regular basis year round pets will be protected from contracting heartworm disease which can cause severe heart or organ damage. Some heartworm preventatives also provide protection against other internal parasites as well including whipworms, hookworms, and roundworms. Talk with your veterinarian about the recommended heartworm product for your pet. And always remember to protect your pet with an easy to administer monthly tablet.
