Training a new pet takes time and patience, but is worth it down the road. Puppies and kittens are generally easier to train than an older pet, but it is never too late to modify behavior in an older dog or cat - it just takes patience and consistency. Owners not familiar with training methods should try to find local trainers or classes to help them work with their pet appropriately. There are numerous good training methods and owners should find one that works for them.


Most pet stores of several levels of training classes ranging from puppy and beginner to expert training. There are also professional dog trainers that work with show dogs or police dogs that can also help the average pet owner to train a pet. If time and/or money may be an issue with finding a trainer for your pet look into doing some of you own research. There are numerous books with detailed guides to training.


For both dogs and cats, obedience is important for the safety and livelihood of the pet. With any behavior however, patience and consistency are critical. Finding a training class or getting detailed instructions from a trainer can make a huge difference. New owners should look into what is available in their area and try to get help from the beginning with new puppies or kittens. And always remember, it's never too late to start training a pet. Most pets will benefit from calm and consistent training and they will be happier, healthier, and more pleasant to be around.
