Insurance Plans Available

Most pet insurance companies specialize in only pet coverage. Depending on the carrier, some provide care to a variety of avian and exotic species and others only cover dogs and cats. The plan options also vary according to carrier however, most offer options similar to those below:

• Accident only - These plans will cover exams and diagnostics relating to an accident. Injuries, accidental poisoning, etc are usually covered. Depending on the carrier, some illnesses may also be covered in these plans or with additional coverage added to the accident plan. No routine exams or wellness products are covered. Usually these plans require a deductible and often have a very low monthly premium but if an accident occurs, it can make all the difference.
• Basic - These cover many of the routine vaccinations, exams and diagnostic tests necessary for a pet in addition to accident and illness coverage. Plus, they will often cover the spay or neuter procedure for the pet. Owners should expect both a monthly premium and a deductible, depending on the carrier.
• Comprehensive - More of the routine and potential costs involved in maintaining the health of the animal are covered in these plans. Besides the coverage in a basic plan, comprehensive plans often include preventative medications like heartworm and flea prevention plus an annual dental cleaning under anesthesia.

Added coverage can be provided according to the pet's needs in some circumstances. While most plans do not cover pre-existing conditions, more carriers are recognizing the need for more complete coverage options that will help older animals or those with chronic conditions that need frequent medical care.
