Hair Tips

Check with your groomer to find out the proper hair grooming for your pet. Dogs can have long or short hair and both require different pet hair care.

Hair Clipping

Some dog breeds will need regular clipping. While some pet haircuts are done for purely aesthetic reasons, other dogs need it for health or comfort reasons. Often thick, long haired breeds will have total body clips in hot climates. Even cats with long and unruly hair can be clipped to prevent matted areas of hair and provide comfort in extreme heat. However, good daily brushing and grooming techniques are encouraged as opposed to total body clipping.

Owners who do not participate in dog shows do not need to keep their pet hair styled according to the dog's standards unless they want to. It takes a lot of upkeep to keep a dog's hair styled. Everyday dog owners can do minimal hair clipping for the comfort of the dog. Consult with your veterinarian or local groomers on the proper techniques to care for the specific breed of dog you own.

Owners can learn to clip their own dogs, but it takes significant patience, the right equipment and a steady hand. Often times it is much safer and easier to find a good groomer. Professional groomers are trained in knowing how to cut hair for each specific breed type. Veterinarians, pet supply stores, neighbors or friends may all have recommendations for groomers in the area that will offer full service grooming for dogs and cats.
