Bathing Dogs

Do not bathe your dog too often. Dogs can go several weeks without baths and bathing too frequently can cause dogs to have dry skin.

Bathing and Brushing

By brushing a pet regularly, the oils in the skin are distributed and the hair coat will be healthier. The recommended frequency of brushing is highly dependent on the breed. For instance, a greyhound may benefit from daily brushing because of the attention and comfort it provides but will not have any harmful effects from not being brushed for several weeks. While a Saint Bernard needs daily brushing during the shedding season to prevent matted hair.

For many pets, brushing can feel like a massage and is a great way for the owner to bond with a pet, but it is important to find an appropriate brush. Just like the recommended frequency is dependent on the breed, the type of brush varies according to the animal. A soft bristle brush is often the best starter brush for puppies and kittens and should be continued in short haired breeds. Longer or thick hair may need rakes, shedding blades or slicker brushes to properly remove loose hair and prevent matted hair. Owners should consult with a trusted pet supply store or their groomer for recommendations.

Cats

Bathing pets should start early in life with some pets. Most cats do not have to be bathed, especially short haired breeds. Cats by nature groom themselves quite well. However, if the cat has a skin condition, medicated shampoos may be necessary on a regular basis. Another way to help remove loose hair and dander on a cat is to use a damp towel to stroke them. This may not be as irritating to the cat and still provide a way to remove hair or apply a medicated product.

Dogs

Dogs, on the other hand, will usually need regular baths. Frequency depends on the breed, environment and skin properties of the dog. While some shampoos can be harsh, most formulas are gentle enough to be used fairly frequently if necessary. Consult with a trusted veterinarian, pet supply store or groomer to find out what is right for the dog.
