Everyone thinks puppies and kittens are cute, but before deciding to add one to your family for a number of years look into the tempermant and needs of a pet that fits your personality and lifestyle.
Some cats are mellow, some are feisty. Some dogs are playful most of the time; some are only playful on their own terms. Depending on the potential owner's personality, there is a pet right for them, but it takes some investigation.
Making a list of positive attributes and characteristics an owner does not want in a pet will help narrow down the choices for a new pet owner. They may want to visit animal shelters or ask friends and neighbors about their pets to get an idea of the common positives or negatives about their pets.
Prospective new pet owners can ask pet experts about what pet types fit their requirements or use breed or behavior books that indicate general characteristics. All pets will be different; however, character traits are best watched in individual animals versus relying on stereotypical traits of a breed. The traits seen in a puppy or kitten might also change with time but by at least observing the animal and having a list in hand, the new owner can narrow the choices and give them a better shot at finding the right pet.
