Research the activity needs of a pet before deciding to bring one home. Make sure you have enough space for your new pet to run around and exercise.
Some pets need very little space and others need more. Size of the animal does not always dictate how much space a particular pet may need. For instance, Great Danes and other giant breed dogs often have a mellow personality and are content in a small home as long as they get proper amounts of activity where they can stretch their legs. Dog owners should make sure they have space outdoors to walk them or let them run around safely. Small toy breeds may not need this as much however, and are a great choice for people who may live in a small apartment where it is harder to find parks or other options for outdoor play time.
Cats also need space and potential owners should think about where they would put a litter pan and food bowls for their new cat. Dogs are notorious for getting into a cat's food or litter so a private space that the cat can only get to might be important. Cat litter boxes can have a strong odor so most people try to find a space away from common areas.
